Weather

Average annual temperatures for August vary from + 18.6 to + 23.6 C and in South Gobi region they reach + 27 C. However, this summer average temperature will be around + 25 C, or 2-3 degrees above the annual average and more rains are expected than usual.

In the beginning of the month, in some areas like central, and south-western part temperature will be + 27 C, while in the rest of the country it will stay around + 22 + 25 C in daytime.

Winds up to 18 m/sec and cold rains will occur towards the end of the months bringing down the temperatures around + 20 Co, and as low as + 11 + 16 Co in daytime in Altai and Khentii Mountains and Huvsgul Lake. In the rest of the country temps will be around + 15 + 20.

Forecasts warn of possible floods, especially in rivers around Huvsgul Lake, Altai Mountain area where water level may suddenly rise by 100-200 cm.

The global warming has its affects on Mongolia. Experts say, that average annual temperatures raised by 1-2 degrees, making winter milder and summers hotter. With less rains, the ground dries out losing its water absorbing capacity which subsequently leads to increasing danger of floods. One teenager girl and one young man died in a sudden flood after 40 minutes heavy rain in the capital city in June. Dozens of ghers were taken away by the mud mass.

Summer weather outlook

Summer is the warmest season in Mongolia, lasting from June to August. In summer also rainy season starts. Knowing the danger of rains, herder prefer to move away from rivers and put up their dwellings on hills to avoid sudden floods. In summer almost 70% of precipitation falls, but this does not mean rainy days. Rains rarely last for more than 2-3 days. Most of rains occur in mid- July and early August.

Temperature fluctuations are relatively small in summer, usually within 10 degrees. Average temperatures in summer are + 20 +25 in Gobi Desert region, and + 15 +20- in mountain areas, though in such high mountain as Altai, Huvsgul, Khentii and Khangai it may be around + 15. In July temperatures may reach + 39 Co, but this does not go longer than two weeks. The highest temperature is in Gobi Desert region, exceeding + 40 C. Hot season with temperatures above 30Co last for more than 40 days in Gobi region.

Winds are a regular feature of Mongolia, with rarely a day without a slow breeze. In summer cool winds come mostly from north, north- west and west bringing in some relief from summer heat. However, sudden collision of warm and cool air masses result in heavy rains, sand storms coming without any warning. Sometimes, cold rain brings down the temperature to a degree when young animals and sheep and goat stripped of their wool freeze at night.

The pressure is the lowest. In July it falls down to 779- 900 bar as compared to 1041 ml/bar in Ulaanbaatar in winter.
